Adam Gilchirst is retiring from Test cricket after the currect match against India, and from ODIs at thge end of the current Australian season.
So yet another Australian leaves the international arena, following in the footsteps of Martyn, McGrath, Warne and Langer in the past year.
Is this the beginning of the end for Australian dominance or am I clutching at straws?
If nothing else, it shows again what the shelf life of an international wicket-keeper is these days - very few stay at the top past their mid-30s without lots of chances going begging (Gilchrist has dropped 5 and missed a couple of stumpings in the Third and Fourth tests against India I believe).
Of course, Alec Stewart was the exception to the rule, and what's even more remarkable is that he's English!

| I think that they are going to miss him quite significantly. Haddin looks ok as a keeper but I don't think that his batting average will ever match Gilchrist's. Always liked Gilchrist, entertaining when batting and a 'walker'. Always struck me as a proper sportsman (which meant he stood out from a reasonable number of his colleagues!). |

There can't be many wicket-keeper's whose average and record will match Gilchrist's, although to be fair to Haddin he has been thought good enough to play six or so ODIs as a specialist batsman, as Gilchrist did at the start of his career before he ousted Ian Healy from the one-day side.
I think Haddin is on a par with a few Gilchrist 'clones' (or some would say pale imitations) who are arouund at the moment - McCallum, Dhoni, Akmal, and arguably Boucher and Prior (although Prior no longer as he won't be in New Zealand). At the very least Australia are going to gain asound 'keeper and a batsman capable of averaging in the low 30s in Test cricket. How much that will weaken the team overall is going to be the interesting part.
